The Bard's Tale, developed by inXile Entertainment (founded by Brian Fargo, creator of the original '80s series), takes the name of that venerable computer RPG franchise and completely reinvents it as an action adventure with a parody-comedy tone, starring a cynical mercenary bard who constantly subverts fantasy-genre clichés. Actor Tony Jay lends his voice to the narrator who sarcastically comments on every one of the protagonist's decisions.
Its self-aware humor and willingness to mock the very conventions of fantasy RPGs clearly set it apart from any serious adaptation of the original franchise, offering an experience that prizes comedy over direct nostalgia for the games that gave it its name.
