American Speedway is an arcade racing game from the second half of the 80s centered on the dirt oval, the club motorsport format popular in the United States, far from the glamour of Formula 1 or endurance racing. The design prioritizes controlled sliding and the fight for position on short tracks over pure speed. It didn't leave much of a mark on the genre's history, but it documents a niche — dirt racing — that arcade racers rarely visited, almost always leaning toward the fantasy of sports cars.
