Battle Zone put the player inside a tank's turret, with a cabinet-mounted periscope and first-person vector graphics drawing a wasteland populated by tanks and distant volcanoes. Atari released it in 1980, and its 3D vector graphics engine — later used even for real U.S. Army military simulators — made it a technical piece ahead of its time. It's one of Atari's great vector-era milestones: along with Asteroids and Tempest, it's part of the trinity that defined what a green-line cabinet could do before raster displays became the arcade business standard.
