Fatal Fury, known in Japan as Garou Densetsu - Shukumei no Tatakai, was SNK's first major fighting game for Neo Geo and the origin of one of the genre's longest-running sagas: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi face the criminal Geese Howard in a two-plane combat structure that allowed dodging attacks by moving toward the back of the screen, a distinctive idea against Street Fighter II. It came out in 1991, very shortly after the boom Capcom had unleashed with its own fighting game. It's a foundational piece: it not only gave rise to the Fatal Fury saga, but its characters and mythology ended up integrating The King of Fighters universe years later, making it a mandatory stop for understanding the complete genealogy of SNK's fighting catalog.
