Space Invaders offers the most elemental confrontation imaginable: a fixed battery slides along the bottom of the screen, firing at a formation of aliens that descends row by row, speeding up as fewer enemies remain alive. That simplicity hid a perfectly calibrated, ever-rising tension, and its commercial success was so outsized that it completely reshaped how big the arcade industry could get.
It is, without exaggeration, one of the starting points of the video game industry as we know it: it set the mold for the formation shooter that Galaxian, Galaga, and dozens of clones would later replicate, and its cultural legacy extends far beyond the medium, alive today in the popular imagination of anyone who has never even touched a joystick.
