Ghostbusters, originally designed by David Crane for the Commodore 64, has the player buying equipment, patrolling the city, and capturing ghosts before paranormal activity reaches catastrophic levels, all under time and budget pressure. The Atari 2600 version, adapted by Dan Kitchen and Adam Bellin and published by Activision in 1985, condenses that management-and-action structure into the limits of the oldest hardware in the company's catalog. It was one of Activision's biggest commercial hits of those years, thanks largely to the film's pull, and its formula of managing resources while resolving the crisis in real time made it one of the best-used movie licenses of the entire 8-bit era.
