Miner 2049er had debuted in 1982 on 8-bit computers as one of the era's great independent hits, with Bounty Bob working his way through ten levels of an abandoned mine, claiming ground just by stepping on it and dodging mutant creatures born of radiation. Big Five Software itself handled the port to the 5200 in 1983, preserving the exploration-and-pattern-memorization structure that had made it a hit. Its maze-like level design, packed with elevators, conveyor belts, and trampolines, made it an early landmark of the exploration-platformer genre, and the 5200 version keeps that same emphasis on careful planning over pure reflexes.
