Phantasy Star Online, developed by Sonic Team, carried the classic saga's dungeon exploration and softened turn-based combat into a real-time action format built for online play, with up to four players exploring the planet Ragol together in search of treasure and answers about an ancient civilization. It was one of the first truly online RPGs on a living-room console, with chat, player-to-player trading, and a global community that connected through Dreamcast's modem or broadband adapter.
For many, it's the game that best represents Sega's online ambition on that console: a bet that was years ahead of what other platforms would later attempt, and one still remembered as a landmark for Dreamcast and for the online RPG genre as a whole.
