Mario Story is the original title of Paper Mario, developed by Intelligent Systems (the studio behind Fire Emblem) and published by Nintendo in 2000 in Japan. The game reimagined Mario in a turn-based JRPG lead role, with a visual style simulating folding paper cutouts in a three-dimensional world, constant humor, and a cast of allies with their own personalities joining the adventure to rescue Peach from Bowser.
It's one of the most beloved JRPGs Nintendo 64 produced, and the starting point of a sub-saga Nintendo would keep alive for more than two decades. Its still-influential visual style and witty writing make it one of the essential pieces in the console's RPG catalog.
