DS Rakubiki Jiten ('easy-to-look-up DS dictionary'), in its various versions, was one of the biggest commercial phenomena of non-game software Nintendo DS had in Japan: it gathers several Japanese, English, and kanji dictionaries on a single cartridge, with handwriting search thanks to the stylus, designed as an affordable substitute for the dedicated electronic dictionaries that dominated the market.
Its success was so great that it helped position DS as a serious study device in Japan, well beyond the traditional gamer audience; today it's a testament to that period when the console competed on equal footing with specialized electronic devices.
