In Europe this title was released simply as 'Castlevania,' though it's actually Lament of Innocence, the prequel set centuries before Symphony of the Night that Koji Igarashi directed to bring the Belmont mythology into three-dimensional action, with Leon Belmont as the first bearer of the legendary whip.
It was Konami's attempt to reinvent Castlevania's exploration formula in 3D without losing its Gothic identity; today it's remembered as a solid installment though less venerated than the 2D classics that preceded and followed it.
