The Bouncer brought together much of the talent behind Final Fantasy VII and VIII -including character designer Tetsuya Nomura- to build a beat 'em up with a strong cinematic stamp, with three protagonists working as bouncers at a nightclub who get caught up in a kidnapping and corporate conspiracy plot that forces them to fight through stages packed with art direction. The game bet on stylized hand-to-hand combat, near-movie-quality cinematics, and a cast of characters with very distinctive designs, though at the cost of a fairly short campaign length that generated mixed reviews at the time. Over the years it ended up being reclaimed as a cult experience, valued more for its aesthetic ambition and soundtrack than for the length of its playable content.
