AFL Live 2004, developed by IR Gurus and published in 2003, continued the annual series of official Australian Football League simulators that this studio had been refining edition after edition. It kept the formula of real rosters and clubs from the competition, with gameplay tweaks over the previous entry and the usual updates to teams and players. Like the rest of the saga, it was distributed almost exclusively in the Australian and New Zealand markets, where the AFL is one of the most deeply rooted popular sports. For the Xbox catalog, it represents one more piece of that tradition of regional sports simulators that rarely crossed borders.
