Arkanoid took the Breakout formula and pushed it to another level: a ship called Vaus bounces a ball against rows of blocks, while falling capsules grant power-ups — lasers, paddle expansion, multiple balls — and a final boss breaks up the format's monotony. Taito released it in Japan in 1986 and it became the genre standard almost instantly. Nearly forty years later it remains the required reference for any brick breaker: its level design and power-up system are still cited as a model, and the game itself is still perfectly enjoyable thanks to its tight pace and well-calibrated difficulty.
