Dragon Ball Z is a fighting game developed by Cobra Team and Magical Formation, and published by Banpresto in 1993, exclusive to the Japanese market, which adapts the anime's Freeza saga into a one-on-one combat format with four buttons and a sixteen-direction joystick, with destructible backgrounds. Its most memorable feature outside the gameplay itself is the cabinet, shaped like a robot decorated with the symbols of Goku's gi. It's the arcade starting point of a franchise that Bandai and other studios would later exploit for decades across every possible platform: a design curiosity, above all for that highly unconventional cabinet, more than a technically memorable fighting game.
