Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara is Capcom's 1996 arcade game, a sequel to Tower of Doom, which brings the Dungeons & Dragons universe into a side-scrolling beat 'em up with RPG elements: inventory management, spells, well-differentiated character classes, and up-to-four-player cooperation that rewards coordination. Its level of detail and depth set it apart from most of its contemporaries. It's rightly considered one of the best beat 'em ups ever made: the combination of direct action with layers of RPG decision-making gave it a depth few games in the genre managed to match, and it remains a mandatory reference in Capcom's arcade catalog.
