Pete Rose Baseball, published by Absolute Entertainment in 1988, offers a baseball simulation with the behind-the-pitcher perspective popularized by Hardball, different camera views depending on where the ball lands on the field, and the ability to control any position on the team. It also included a management mode that allowed playing up to ten consecutive seasons, building and renewing the roster—one of the earliest approaches to a career mode within the genre. When Activision re-released the game in its Activision Anthology compilation, it had to rename it simply Baseball because the licensing deal with Pete Rose had already expired, a detail that today serves as a curiosity about just how fleeting the commercial value of a real sports license can be.
