Up'n Down, a 1983 Sega arcade game, offers a race with a geometric twist: the track has two overlapping height levels, and the player's car can jump from one to the other mid-air to dodge rivals, collect flags, and earn extra points. That combination of isometric driving and vertical platforming set it apart from the huge mass of racing games of the era, with difficulty that rose quickly as the track filled with obstacles. It got ports to numerous home systems of the early 80s, all faithful to that central idea of jumping between heights while racing.
