Contra - Dual Spirits, developed by American studio WayForward Technologies and published by Konami -the first time a US studio was put in charge of a numbered Contra-, revisits the formula that made the series famous since the eighties: running, jumping, and shooting nonstop against waves of enemies and enormous bosses, with weapon power-ups that change the pace of each stretch. DS also let the two players use separate screens to see more of the stage in co-op mode.
It was well received for giving the series back some of the difficulty and classic level design that previous 3D entries had diluted, and it remains one of the best pure run and gun options within the console's catalog.
