"Makai Toushi Sa-Ga" debuted in 1989 as one of Square's most distinctive RPG series: worlds with unconventional playable races, a growth system based on usage rather than traditional accumulated experience, and a narrative freedom that set it apart from Dragon Quest or even Final Fantasy itself. This WonderSwan Color remake updated the graphics and sound while keeping that structure intact, part of the wave of Game Boy classics Square relaunched for Bandai's handheld.
For anyone who only knows SaGa through its more recent entries, this is a direct way back to the series' seed, in a format far friendlier than the original monochrome cartridge.
