Asteroids Deluxe picks up Atari's original formula — blast asteroids apart with a fighter that rotates and fires in vector graphics — and adds more speed, new enemies, and the removal of hyperspace as an easy escape, replaced by a temporary shield. It came out in 1981 as a response to the fact that many players had found ways to exploit the original Asteroids' design. It's one of the most remembered vector sequels of Atari's golden era, appreciated for its fine-tuned difficulty curve and for retaining that graphical minimalism that today reads almost as abstract art.
