In Avenging Spirit, published by Jaleco in 1991, the hero dies on the first screen and continues the adventure as a spirit capable of possessing the enemies he defeats, inheriting their jumping, shooting, or strength abilities. It's an original twist on the one-button action platformer of the era. The possession mechanic sets it apart from the sea of generic late-80s platformers: each new body changes the pace of play, and that constant variety is why it's still mentioned as a clever rarity in Jaleco's catalog.
