B.Rap Boys Special follows the side-scrolling beat 'em up formula — walk and throw punches against waves of thugs — but dresses it in an urban-gang, hip-hop aesthetic uncommon for the era, closer to American street imagery than to the ninjas and mobsters of other genre titles.
It remained one among the huge offering of beat 'em ups Data East and its competitors released in those years; its interest today lies in that particular setting, which sets it apart visually even though the gameplay doesn't stray too far from the mold.
