Battle Garegga, developed by Raizing and published by 8ing in 1996, is one of the most influential vertical shooters of its generation: it introduced a difficulty-rank system extremely sensitive to player behavior, where every shot fired, power-up collected, or life lost adjusts enemy aggression, which became a case study within the genre.
Its level design set in an alternate steampunk war and its extremely high skill ceiling made it a cult classic among shmup specialists, and it remains today a required reference for understanding the Japanese school of 90s vertical shooters.
