Block Gal, published by Tehkan in 1985, is a block-breaking game with paddle and ball -in the vein of Breakout- to which a common Japanese arcade device of the era is added: clearing each board progressively reveals a character illustration. The core mechanic is pure, classic brick-breaker. As a historical curiosity, it's interesting because it predates Arkanoid's release by a year, the title that would end up defining the genre's mold for the rest of the decade.
