Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom is a 1982 Sega arcade game that reuses its Zoom 909 engine with the license of science-fiction hero Buck Rogers, putting the player at the controls of a ship advancing 'into' the screen while dodging obstacles and shooting enemies, with a sprite-scaling effect that was very striking at the time. It was one of the first serious attempts to simulate three-dimensional depth in arcades.
Today it's appreciated mostly as a technical piece from an era when 'looking 3D' was in itself a commercial achievement. Gameplay-wise it's simple and repetitive, but as a demonstration of early-80s sprite engineering it retains its interest.
