Burning Rival is one of Konami's attempts to break into the one-on-one fighting genre that Street Fighter II had made mandatory for any manufacturer in the early nineties. It follows the era's standard structure —health bar, special moves, tournament of rivals— without contributing much in terms of mechanical innovation compared to its contemporaries.
It was quickly overshadowed by Capcom's and SNK's own fighting catalogs, and today it's remembered more as a curiosity within Konami's output than as a title with its own following, though it retains some interest for those who collect the studio's lesser-known production.
