Choplifter is the arcade version of Dan Gorlin's classic, originally released for the Apple II in 1982, in which the player pilots a helicopter to rescue hostages trapped behind enemy lines, dodging tanks, planes, and anti-aircraft fire while flying them back to a safe base. The arcade conversion adapted that pioneering side-scrolling design and rescue objectives to the arcade format.
It was one of the first significant adaptations of a home computer game to the arcade circuit, a path rarely traveled in that direction (it was usually the other way around). It's remembered as a foundational piece of the aerial-rescue subgenre, the spiritual ancestor of so many helicopter shooters that would follow.
