Donkey Kong Anniversary Edition takes the code of the 1981 Donkey Kong and applies cosmetic or difficulty tweaks conceived as an anniversary celebration, without changing the underlying gameplay: Mario must climb platforms and ladders dodging barrels while Donkey Kong holds Pauline at the top. It's not an official Nintendo product.
Like most of these commemorative hacks, its value is sentimental rather than about design: a way the preservation community pays tribute to one of the medium's foundational games without altering what made it great.
