Donkey Kong Jr. reverses the original's roles: Mario, protagonist of the first Donkey Kong, now appears as the antagonist, and the player controls the gorilla's son in his attempt to rescue him from a cage. The gameplay keeps the original's logic of climbing structures and dodging hazards, but adds a new element: vines to hang from for vertical movement, in addition to the traditional ladders.
It's one of the few direct sequels Nintendo made within classic arcades before turning fully to the home console business, and it's still remembered as a clever twist on the formula the original Donkey Kong had established just a year earlier.
