Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa is Sega's follow-up to its 1986 classic shooter, keeping the colorful, fantasy aesthetic so far removed from the genre's usual war tone, along with the shop system that allows buying upgrades with money collected during the match. It came out in 1987 with new levels and bosses. That mix of accessible shooter and its own economic system remains what sets the saga apart within the genre: a shoot 'em up designed to be enjoyed without the extreme demands of other Japanese shooters of the era.
