Before inventing the Adventure Construction Set, Stuart Smith put out this little gem for the Atari 8-bit in 1981: Ali Baba roaming palaces and caves to rescue a princess from the forty thieves, with turn-based combat and characters that move like pieces on a living board.
Its blend of adventure, maze-like maps and RPG numbers makes it a quiet pioneer of the genre on computers. The Thousand and One Nights, served in 8 bits with the dry humor of a lone programmer.
