Boxing is the game Activision released in 1980 for the Atari 2600, designed by David Crane, one of the studio's founders and one of the most talented programmers of that first generation. For the first time on a home console, boxers had articulated arms capable of moving independently of their legs, a notable technical achievement given how limited the hardware was, letting players chain combinations in a way the genre had never seen before.
The game was also one of Activision's first big hits as an independent third-party studio, early proof that you could get more out of Atari's console than Atari itself was showing. Its influence shows in every side-view boxing game that came after.
