"California Games," in its original computer version, brought together half a dozen disciplines tied to California's beach and skate culture — surfing, skateboarding, footbag, frisbee, BMX — in a minigame structure played in turns, adding up a score. Porting it to the 2600, already near the end of the console's life cycle, forced Epyx to drastically simplify each event, but it kept the core idea of competing event by event against your own personal best.
It's a curious testament to how far the 2600's catalog got stretched: in 1988 it was still receiving conversions of computer hits, adapted with whatever ingenuity it took to squeeze all of California into a handful of kilobytes.
