Championship Soccer is the soccer game Atari developed and published in 1981 for the 2600, with two defenders, a forward, and a goalkeeper controlled by the computer except when saving a shot. Shortly after its release, the company added Pelé's endorsement and renamed it Pelé's Soccer for marketing campaigns, though modern reissues usually revert to the original name for trademark reasons.
Pelé's own promotional tour quadrupled the cartridge's sales, and it ended up being the Atari 2600's best-selling title that summer. It's a good example of how sports marketing, long before official league licenses existed, was already moving the needle in the fledgling industry.
