Dig Dug brings Namco's arcade formula to the 2600: the player digs tunnels underground to chase Pooka and Fygar, pumping them full of air until they pop, or crushing them with rocks that break loose from the terrain. The home version simplifies the original graphics but keeps the core mechanic that made the arcade one of the biggest hits of the early '80s. It's one of the sturdiest conversions in the Atari 2600's late catalog, published directly by Atari, and a good example of how the console kept getting heavyweight adaptations even as the market had already started looking toward newer systems.
