Football, published by Atari in the late '70s, offers a schematic representation of American football with simple offensive and defensive plays, at a time when the mere idea of a team sport running on a home console was already a novelty. It was part of the first batch of sports cartridges Atari released to broaden the 2600's appeal beyond pure action. Its simplicity is typical of its era: with no team or real-player licenses, it bet purely and exclusively on the mechanic of advancing the ball, something that laid the groundwork for the sports games that would come later on the same console.
