H.E.R.O. is the game Activision released in 1984 for the Atari 2600, with John Van Ryzin as lead designer: the player controls Roderick Hero, a rescuer equipped with a propulsion backpack, a helmet-mounted forward laser, and dynamite, descending into collapsed mines to save trapped miners while dodging lava, bats, and giant spiders. Each level combines exploration, platforming, and careful management of the equipment's limited resources.
It was one of the most technically ambitious titles in the Atari 2600's late catalog, at a point when the console was already showing its limits against the new generation of hardware. H.E.R.O. proved there was still cutting-edge design to explore even on an eight-year-old machine, and today it's remembered as one of Activision's great quiet classics.
