Hat Trick came out in 1988, developed by Ibid, Inc. and published by Atari Corporation: hockey matches viewed from an overhead perspective, with simplified controls for passes, shots, and player switching, designed for quick matches against the computer or a second player. It was part of the sports line Atari kept adding to the 7800 catalog to compete with rival consoles. It didn't innovate much on the genre's already-established formula of the era, but it fulfilled the role of offering a winter sports alternative within a catalog that tended to lean more toward action and shooters.
