Road Runner is the arcade game Atari Games released in 1986, a faithful adaptation of the Warner Bros. cartoon: the player controls the Road Runner in his eternal flight from the Coyote, collecting seeds along the way, dodging cars, and solving road mazes, all while the screen scrolls from right to left instead of the usual direction, a deliberate reversal that forces players to relearn the genre's reflexes. It ran on Atari System 1 hardware, with vivid color graphics and stereo sound unusual for the time.
It was ported to a huge number of home computers and consoles, from the Commodore 64 to the NES, cementing the Warner Bros. license as one of the most exploited in the mid-80s arcade catalog. That reversed scroll direction remains, today, its most recognizable trademark.
