Shuttle Orbiter offers a simplified space shuttle simulation, with launch, orbit, and possibly reentry maneuvers resolved within the Atari 2600's graphical limitations, at a time when NASA's Space Shuttle program still generated enormous public enthusiasm after its 1981 debut. It's part of the small group of more contemplative space-simulation games the console had, far removed from pure shooting action. Its unhurried pace and simulation-oriented aim set it apart from the rest of the 2600's space-themed catalog, mostly devoted to combat against alien invaders rather than genuine scientific exploration.
