Doom 64 isn't a port of the original Doom but an almost complete reconstruction: Midway Studios San Diego worked under id Software's supervision to create all-new levels, a graphics engine retouched with dynamic color lighting, and new weapon and monster designs, all without losing the run-and-gun essence that defined the genre. It came out in 1997 and was, for a long time, the saga's 'lost' entry, rarely played outside the console's fan circle.
Over the years it gained belated recognition thanks to its remaster for modern platforms, which led many people to rediscover just how well this chapter held up. Within N64's shooter catalog, it remains one of the most faithful to id Software's original spirit.
