It's part of a wave of PC games ported to DS that took the formula of matching three or more identical pieces — popularized by Bejeweled — and dressed it up with a thematic excuse: here, gradually unlocking the construction of monuments like the pyramids or the Colossus of Rhodes as boards are cleared. The target audience was the same as those casual PC games: short sessions, visual progression as the reward, zero learning curve.
On DS it coexisted with dozens of similar titles (Jewel Quest, Cradle of Rome, Chuzzle) that used the stylus to make the piece-matching gesture more direct than with a mouse. Today it's one more of that batch, with no pretension of being more than a pastime.
