Developed by the independent studio Renegade Kid, 'Dementium: The Ward' surprised by bringing first-person survival horror -with a flashlight, limited inventory, and an oppressive hospital-corridor aesthetic- to hardware that didn't seem designed for the genre. Its setting, somewhere between body horror and madness, owes much of its identity to that risky design bet.
It earned a cult following among players looking for something different in DS's horror catalog, much more limited than that of other consoles of the era. It remains a must for anyone who wants to see how far the genre could be stretched on the handheld.
