Golvellius, developed by Compile and released in 1987 for the MSX, is a top-down action RPG in which the player guides Kelesis through eight distinct zones, each ruled by its own boss, in search of an herb capable of healing the King of Rena and thereby rescuing the princess who bears his name. The design, the work of legendary Compile developer Satoshi "Pac" Fujishima, blends exploration, dungeons, and melee combat with a fluidity rare for its time. A year later, Sega licensed the formula for the Master System under the name Golvellius: Valley of Doom, with entirely different maps and dungeons, and in 2024 the original MSX2 version received an official re-release on Nintendo Switch.
