Ar tonelico - Melody of Elemia offered a twist on the traditional JRPG: the 'Reyvateils,' heroines able to sing songs that worked as combat magic, with lyrics that were revealed and evolved as the bond with the protagonist grew. Gust, the studio behind the Atelier series, used that mechanic to build an uncommon relationship system for the genre.
Its arrival in the West via NIS America also marked one of the publisher's first steps toward niche JRPGs with careful localization. Today it's remembered as the start of a beloved trilogy for its blend of turn-based strategy and bond-building, a direct predecessor to other titles with similar mechanics.
This system doesn't run in the browser yet (Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2 and Xbox are on the way as web emulation matures). The dossier, media and community are already all yours.
