Armored Core 2 arrived just a few months after PlayStation 2's launch and immediately showed what the new console could do with a genre FromSoftware already dominated on PS1: fully modular mechas, with thousands of combinations of parts, weapons, and systems, and missions that rewarded both design strategy and combat skill. It laid the groundwork for much of what the series would repeat throughout the generation, and remains an essential reference for understanding how FromSoftware built, long before Dark Souls, an identity based on demanding difficulty and deep customization.
