This trial edition, distributed in Japan to promote the game before or around its release, offered a playable slice of the original Devil May Cry: Dante facing demons with sword and twin pistols, under the style-scoring system that Hideki Kamiya and his team at Capcom invented almost by accident while developing what would become Resident Evil 4. Like every trial edition, its value today is mostly archaeological: a snapshot of how Capcom presented to the public a game that would end up founding an entire genre.
