25 to Life arrived in 2006, developed by Avalanche Software together with Ritual Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive, with an unusual premise: players could side with either the police or a street gang in urban shootouts set to a hip-hop soundtrack. The online component supported up to sixteen players over Xbox Live, ambitious for its time. The game earned more headlines for the controversy its subject matter stirred up than for its gameplay: it was even banned in Germany and criticized by various sectors before it even shipped. Specialized critics gave it a cold reception, pointing to a rough package that didn't live up to the media noise it generated.
