Brute Force offered command of a four-mercenary team with distinct abilities — assault, sniper, engineering, stealth — letting players switch between them or issue real-time orders, a formula built to show off on Microsoft's console. It was developed by Digital Anvil, the studio founded by Chris Roberts, and published by Microsoft itself.
It launched on May 27, 2003 in North America as an Xbox exclusive and, as reported at the time, broke the console's previous first-day and first-week sales records. It was one of the most ambitious cooperative shooters of that stage of Xbox, though it never got a sequel despite its initial commercial success.
